In Britain (where we're both originally from), Timbuktu has since Victorian days, been used as a metaphor for distant, faraway lands.
In keeping with the original TPE’s 1920s explorer-style visual theme, Timbuktu was chosen as the default location to suggest planning for a photographic expedition to an exotic location.
